Over the past several years we have obtained photometry for a large number of transneptunian objects (TNOs) using the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). The primary focus of this research has been to detect and identify resolved and partially resolved binary systems for further follow-up and study. Pursuing these binaries has led naturally to a postponement in the reduction and release of photometry for the apparently single TNOs. While not as appealing as binarity, knowing the magnitudes and colors of these objects is important for understanding the structure and evolution of the Kuiper Belt. Therefore, at this meeting we combine and present the complete photometry obtained from two of our HST observing programs.
These two HST programs have generated photometry for 121 TNOs. The first program observed 78 objects with the WFPC2 camera using the F555w, F675W, and F814W filters, corresponding roughly to V, R and I. The second program observed 79 objects with the F110W ( J) and F160W ( H) filters on the NICMOS camera. Of the 121 objects, 36 were observed with both WFPC2 and NICMOS, and their results combined. In this poster, we will present the photometry, colors, and dynamical classifications for all 121 TNOs and discuss the trends and results we find.
Support for this work was provided by NASA through grant numbers 9060 and 9386 from the SPACE TELESCOPE SCIENCE INSTITUTE, which is operated by the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy, Inc., under NASA contract NAS5-26555.
