Equilibrium cloud condensation models predict a multilayer structure for Jupiter's clouds [1,2]. For 3 × solar abundances of each, H2O, NH3, and H2S, the predicted cloud density upper limits are on the order of 10-1 g/l for water droplet cloud (main layer), 10-2 g/l for H2O ice cloud, 5x10-3 g/l for NH4SH cloud, and 10-3 g/l for NH3 ice cloud [3]. These cloud concentrations vary depending on the assumption for the enrichment of the elements in Jupiter's atmosphere [3,4]. Particle growth, followed by precipitation and associated dynamical effects, is expected to reduce the cloud concentration by several factors of ten. Even in the absence of data on Jupiter's water clouds, we can arrive at reasonable predictions using the terrestrial clouds as an analog. The best knowledge of any clouds available to date comes from the Earth-observing missions such as AIRS, CALIPSO, and CloudSat. Using these satellite data, together with radiosonde measurements, and an equilibrium model of Earth's clouds, we will attempt to predict opacities of Jovian clouds. Future space missions, such as Juno, which will study Jupiter's meteorology and observe both dry and wet regions of its atmosphere using microwave radiometry and infrared spectrometry, will benefit from the greater knowledge of the cloud characteristics.
