We propose an innovative and unique observing program for M81 to unlock an area that is completely unexplored for any galaxy but our own. We will observe the galaxy every 3 days for a total of 6 weeks, each time reaching a luminosity limit of 5e36 erg/s. Our observations will probe an new regime of variability for extragalactic sources, providing us with information from which we can make secure classifications. When combined together, these data will be the deepest yet Chandra exposure of a complete galaxy. Our data will provide a critical test and calibration of the use of X-ray luminosity functions as a characterization of a galaxy's X-ray sources. Given their ubiquity in the literature, this has far reaching ramifications.
