We propose to observe the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 5548 for 147 ks with the LETGS in order to obtain a high-resolution X-ray spectrum. NGC 5548 has been observed earlier with the LETGS on two different occasions. A comparison of both spectra shows that a significant change in the warm absorber occurred in the K-shell absorption line of O V, the most lowly ionized oxygen ion with a well measured absorption line. A recent HST observation shows significant changes in the column density of the different velocity components of C IV. With our new observation we will study further the long term variability of the outflow, by comparing the X-ray spectrum with the two earlier LETGS spectra as well as archival HETGS and XMM-Newton RGS spectra.
