A 100 ksec ACIS-I observation of the very young star cluster NGC 6231 will probe a suspected strong deficit of low-mass stars in this cluster. For a cluster of the age and distance of NGC 6231, Chandra X-ray observations are uniquely suited to efficiently select low-mass pre-main-sequence members that are virtually unidentifiable by any other means. Finding the low-mass cluster population will have strong implications for our knowledge of different aspects of the stellar formation process, from the initial mass function to mass segregation, and from star formation history and sequential star formation to star formation efficiency. The proposed observation can test definitely whether or not star formation in NGC 6231 has been peculiar, i.e., in yielding very few low-mass stars.
