Geodesy, Meridian Arc, Size And Figure Of The Earth, World Heritage, F.G.W. Struve

Scientific paper

The authors provide a brief history of attempts to measure the size and shape of the Earth, stressing the close relationship between astronomers and geodetic surveyors who, indeed, were often the same people. Particular interest is placed on F.G.W. Struve's measure of the meridian through Dorpat (modern Tartu, Estonia), which extended over 25° 20' and was made in the early nineteenth century. Sites connected with this measurement were designated as World Heritage sites by UNESCO in 2005, and the authors describe the steps taken to achieve this result.
