The emission of gamma-ray burst GB 881024 is decomposed into two physically distinct non-correlated components by means of a technique called rate-rate diagrams. One of the components dominates at energies below 250 keV and the other one dominates above 250 keV. Time histories and rate/spectrum evolution of the components are considered. The low-energy component manifests clear hardness/rate correlation while the high-energy one does not. The main known types of hardness/rate evolution of gamma-ray bursts are then explained as a result of superposition of components. Possible astrophysical consequences are discussed.
