Circular Polarization, Dust

Scientific paper

We calculated the degree of circular polarization of light singly scattered by some types of asymmetrical particles in random orientation as a function of scattering angle, using the T-matrix method. Aggregates of equal non-active spheres with a silicate-like refractive index (1.5+i0.001) were considered. We analyzed the effect of changing both the size of the monomers and the shape of the aggregates. To study the effect of changing the size, we first used an aggregate composed of seven monomers. We found that for a volume-equivalent size parameter of 4, the values of the degree of circular polarization are in the range of the ones observed for light scattered by dust particles in comets Halley and Hale-Bopp, in the interplanetary medium and in the interstellar medium of our galaxy. By changing the geometry to aggregates of 25 monomers we obtained similar values for the circular polarization, although these particles are not strongly asymmetrical
