Recent Compton Telescope (COMPTEL) images of the Galactic plane in the light of 1.809 MeV gamma rays provide spatial information of the distribution of AlL-26 sources in the Galaxy. We use galactocentric distributions based on plausible tracers of massive stars, combined with a realistic spiral structure model, to derive two-dimensional spatial distributions for candidate Al-26 sources. Comparison to the COMPTEL map shows that the model explains the overall appearance and particular features related to spiral structure. We conclude that massive stars embedded in the spiral arms dominate the 1.809 MeV sky image. Some differences between observed and theoretical maps indicate that more refined models are needed to explain additional irregularities, both in latitude extent and along the plane. These differences suggest either that regions of recent nucleosynthetic activity occur outside the spiral arms, or that the spiral arm pattern is poorly known, especially in the inner Galaxy.
