Light pollution remains a serious problem for many observatories, as well as for the general public. It is getting worse in many locations. However, where individuals and organizations have been able to spend the time and effort to educate about the value of dark skies and of quality outdoor nighttime lighting, progess in controlling the problem is being made. The lighting industry is aware of our concerns and improvements are being made in a number of areas. Lighting control ordiancnes are another positive factor in the solutions, and over 50 are in place in Arizona with others in California, Hawaii, and other locations. Many more are pending, including locations in the eastern United States and abroad. The AAS Committee that deals with the issue now has a Web page, as does the International Dark-Sky Association and other groups. IDA is a source of material for those interested in the issues, with information sheets, slides sets, and other resources. Its membership is now over 1700 from 49 of the 50 states and 61 other countries.
