The following results from HIRES will be described: (1) the nature of a ``Damped Lyman alpha (DLA)'' absorber at z = 4.39, (2) results of searches for the Mg II and C IV forests accompanying the Lyman alpha forest, (3) attempts to simulate the Lyman alpha forest at z = 4.1, (4) the nature of the Lyman alpha forest at z = 4.7, and (5) results of a search for molecular gas in a DLA absorption system.
