The Very Large Telescope (VLT) at Paranal, Chile, is the culmination of years of work by scientists at the European Southern Observatory. The successful implementation of the first in this new array of advanced telescopes suggests that European astronomy facilities will shortly be competing with those in the USA for the first time in almost a hundred years. Since May 1998, the VLT has been delivering a steady flow of scientific data from a variety of observations, including a programme designed to verify the scientific credibility and efficiency of the first operational telescope and its instruments. The VLT is setting records in a number of areas; one of them is data acquisition.
