Nearly 400 extragalactic supernovae have been observed over the past 90 years. The observations have helped to make it possible to develop a complete picture of the life cycle of stars. A description is presented of the techniques by which galaxies are monitored for supernovas, taking into account Dunlap's real-time search program in which hundreds of galaxies can be checked each night. Characteristics, models, and observations are discussed concerning the two classes into which supernovae can be divided on the basis of their spectra. Attention is given to the manufacture of heavy elements in supernovae. It is possible that supernovae are responsible for the heavier elements in the sun, the earth, and the earth's living organisms.
