Observed carbon isotope ratios in evolved stars are compared with values
predicted according to the standard stellar model, and various
discrepancies are pointed out. The effects of initial composition
fluctuation, meridional mixing, hydrogen shell instability, mixing at
helium flash, and mass loss on the standard stellar model are discussed.
