The case is argued that the beam from a pulsar is formed by the orbital velocity of the source, which must be situated far out in the magnetosphere of the neutron star, where the velocity can approach the velocity of light. This velocity can then produce a relativistic beam compression, which could account for the lighthouse beam of a pulsar even from a source whose radiation is nearly isotropic. Relativistic beaming, a geometrical phenomenon, is shown to be able to account for the observed constant beamwidth and full polarization of the subpulses making up the integrated radio pulses.
