Galactic X-ray sources, particularly binary sources, are investigated by studying the transfer of radiation from a point source of X-rays through a given gas distribution and by considering how the radiation affects the gas flow. The simple case of radiative transfer through a constant density gas is investigated first. A scaling law for optically thick cases is derived. The temperature and ionization structure are sensitive to the X-ray source spectrum, particularly to the relative luminosity in soft X-rays. The emerging spectrum is rich in optical, UV, and X-ray emission lines. Investigations of the radiative transfer from an X-ray source through a stellar wind from a companion star show observable geometric effects that can be used to derive some parameters of X-ray binary systems and to set constraints on others.
