The cooling function of HD molecules is calculated for conditions characteristic of the initial gas condensations that eventually contracted into stars, taking deviations from local thermodynamic equilibrium into account. The role of chemical enrichment of the gas by HD molecules is investigated. It is shown that the HD molecule constituted the major heat-transferring gas component at the initial stage of condensation during the formation of first-generation (i.e., Population II) stars.
