The paper addresses the communication network isssues of low earth orbit constellations, and provides a quantitative measure for the probability of connectivity of space networks operating in a stressed environment. The satellite network is modeled in constellations of three, six, and nine satellites in three equally spaced orbital planes at an altitude of 4000 n.mi. The impact of three important vulnerabilities of low earth orbit satellite links, auroral effects, nuclear effects, and jamming, are examined. Methodology that can be used to define communication requirements, once the system applications are better defined, is presented.
