A description is given of a potential test concerning the cosmological nature of the redshift of a quasi-stellar object (QSO). A plot of the emission line width of a specified spectral line against the redshift of a QSO is considered. The full width at half maximum intensity (FWHM) can be selected as parameter. A preliminary plot for a sample of southern sources reveals a large scatter for the MgII line of low redshift QSOs. It is suggested to attempt the test with better measurements of line widths.
