In order to determine whether the observed periodic photometric variations in Nova Cygni 1975 are due to continuum or emission line variations, time-resolved scans of the forbidden O-III complex (4959 and 5007 A) in Nova Cygni were obtained, which established the stability of this emission feature. Two nights of conventional differential photometry using a Stromgren y filter revealed that the continuum is highly variable while the total flux in forbidden O III and H beta is nearly constant. The continuum variations must originate in the central object rather than in localized regions of the envelope because of the stability of the emission line profiles and light travel time arguments.
