After presenting such essential concepts of the theory of gravitational collapse and black hole physics as those of trapped surfaces and apparent horizons, attention is given to concepts of energy density and total energy in general relativity; Nester's expression for the total four-momentum is also presented. Simple, spherically symmetric models are invoked to clarify the Hawking effect, as well as calculations of the stress-energy tensor and the back-reaction problem. It is suggested that the event horizon need not play as critical a role in black hole physics as is usually assumed.
