Two new mechanisms for the formation of sudden sodium layers (SSLs) are tentatively proposed here. One involves ion-ion recombination between coincident layers of Na(+) and O(-) ions formed by e + O2. This reaction, endothermic at room temperatures, may be important during auroras when energetic electrons are present and/or if sufficiently large electric fields are present. A less likely conjecture is that layers of atomic oxygen may mix with layers of sodium compounds to produce SSLs.
