We have observed a large fraction of the stars having spectral types between F0 and B5 in the Orion OB1 association using the photometric "Δα" peculiarity index that measures the strength of the 5200 Å continuum flux depression, characteristic of the Ap stars. We have obtained "Δα" observations for most of the known and suspected Ap and Helium-weak stars in the association. We find that the frequency of Ap stars in Orion is significantly lower than in the field. If the majority of the Helium-weak stars in Orion eventually acquire the Ap characteristics, the frequency of Ap stars in Orion could eventually equal the frequency in the field. Such a gradual heavy element enrichment can also explain the lower barΔα value of the Orion Ap stars.
