In this paper, we present a Monte Carlo study of Thomson scattering in a tidally distorted circumstellar envelope. HDE 226868, the optical component of Cygnus X-1, seems to be accounted for by such a model if minor physical effects, which are common in binaries, are added. Indeed, a star which nearly fills its Roche lobe may be described by a prolate ellipsoïd. During the orbital period, polarization and light suffer variations whose amplitudes depend on the orbital inclination i. We deduce 20° ≲ i ≲ 40° from the observed variations.
