Multidimensional radiative transfer under non-LTE conditions is investigated. Line formation strictly by two-level atoms is treated with both coherent scattering and complete redistribution and with non-LTE parameters ranging from epsilon 0.1 to 0.000001. Lateral transfer effects increase with increasing non-LTE conditions and may, in the solar case, compete with observational limitation of angular resolution. Calculations of line transfer in simple model structures in the solar chromosphere show that horizontal migration of photons may diminish the contrast by an order of magnitude compared to that expected in a one-dimensional treatment.
