The relationship between the thermodynamic path followed by a fluid particle in the wake of a shock wave and the path as a function of position and time is investigated. The calculations here pertain to the solar transition region and the isochoric (constant volume) part of the Weymann thermodynamic cycle. Consistent solutions are obtained for temperatures less than approximately 400,000 K in a stationary state model of a coronal hole. Results are given that illustrate the variations of thermodynamic quantities, in particular, temperature and density: (1) following a fluid particle behind a shock wave, (2) with height in the atmosphere at a given time, and (3) with time at a given height. It is noted that these calculations are an essential preliminary to the evaluation of spectral line profiles.
