The absolute magnitude of the Am stars has been determined by a statistical parallax method based on the principle of maximum likelihood applied to a sample of 165 stars. The calibration of the absolute magnitude has been carried out in terms of different photometric indices from the UBV, usby and seven-color (Geneva) systems. The results have been compared to the values obtained from Am stars in visual binary systems and in clusters. We showed that barMυ = 1m.2±0m.3 and that consequently the Am stars lie one magnitude above the main sequence, the exact amount depending upon the definition of the MS used.
