The radio velocity field of the spiral galaxy M101 has been derived from the 21-cm line observations of the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope. The galaxy can be divided into a kinematically well-behaved inner part and a distorted outer part; a rotation curve was derived for the inner part, and weak evidence exists for the presence of systematic motions associated with the spiral structure. Determination of the mass distribution in the outer region of the galaxy indicates that not all the material is located in the main plane of the galaxy, but it is difficult to infer a distribution of matter consistent with the observed radial velocity field.
