The pulsar PSR 1822-09 (a suspected gamma-ray source) has been observed at 1620 MHz, 1720 MHz, and 2650 MHz. The emission is found to switch repeatedly between two distinct modes, each with characteristic intensity and subpulse behavior patterns. In the 'quiescent' mode, the first component of the main pulse is extremely weak and a stable, long-period subpulse drift is observed in the second component. In the 'burst' mode, the first component becomes prominent with only occasional short-period drift occurring in the second component. The interpulse emission is detected at 1720 MHz and evidence of its participation in the mode-changing is presented. An attempt is made to account for these observations in terms of current pulsar emission theories.
