The paper reviews satellite observations of X-ray sources other than the sun. Fundamental techniques involved in astronomical X-ray observations are reviewed, different detectors are described, and lunar occultations of X-ray sources are discussed. The nature of compact X-ray sources is considered, and observational results are summarized for seven X-ray binary sources. Attention is also given to identified globular-cluster and transient sources. Models are proposed for the transient sources Cen X-4, Cen X-2, A1118-61, and A0620-00. Properties of several supernova remnants identified with soft X-ray sources are discussed in relation to emission mechanisms. Identified extragalactic sources are examined, including Cen A, the Seyfert galaxy NGC 4151, the quasar 3C 273, and the Coma, Virgo, and Perseus clusters of galaxies.
