X-ray measurements at Fe-K-alpha (6.4 keV) ranging over 3-4 orders of magnitude of reflected intensity were obtained for samples coated by Au, Ir, Pt, and Ni. The coatings are well described using a model consisting of a region of constant bulk density and a top layer where the density varies from the bulk value to zero. The results illustrate that the coating process rather than the material is crucial in achieving high reflectivity.
