The X-ray Multi-Mirror Mission (XMM) is the second cornerstone of the long-term science plan Horizon 2000 of the ESA. The prime scientific objective of XMM is to perform high-throughput spectroscopy of cosmic X-ray sources over a broad band of energies ranging from 0.1 to 10 keV. Wolter type I optics are shown here to fulfill the XMM requirements both for high throughput over a broad energy band up to at least 10 keV and subarcmin angular resolution. The optical design and layout is reviewed, and the expected high X-ray reflectivity is measured on flat samples of mirrors coated with iridium. The samples show excellent low-surface microroughness. An angular resolution of about 30 arcsec HEW for single reflection is achieved.
