Experimental results are presented for observations of ring-current proton injection during a bay on October 28, 1973, and three storms on January 25, February 12, and February 21, 1974. Asymmetry of the protons was observed relative to the noon-midnight meridian during the major phases of the storms, and particle injection was accompanied by changes in the shape of the energy spectrum at the inner edge of the ring current. The possible influence of the ion-cyclotron instability on the formation of this inner edge is analyzed. Immediately after the major phases of the storms, a dip with energies of several tens of keV was observed in the spectrum in the pre-midnight sector. It is suggested that the dip may have been caused by the development of an instability leading to pitch-angle diffusion of the protons and their destruction in the plasmapause.
