A possible reason for the enhancement of convection at specific levels in the solar convection zone that results in convection-cell motion is proposed along with a criterion for the temperature and density at the lower boundary of the convection zone. It is shown that the characteristic size scales observed on the solar surface may be explained by assuming that the ratio of horizontal to vertical cell size is constant for all convection cells. Analytical expressions for the depths and vertical sizes of cells are derived in the adiabatic approximation. Circulation rates are estimated for some supergranulation and giant cells.
