Imshennik's (1960) theory on the isothermal expansion of a gas cloud is applied to elucidate structural characteristics of the outer layers of planetary nebulae and the dynamics of these objects. It is shown that the observed decrease in brightness near the outer edge of 10 arbitrarily chosen planetaries is well explained by the theory. The possibility is demonstrated of estimating the age of planetary nebulae from the photometric structure of their outer edge, and it is noted that all basic facts about the dynamics of planetaries can be understood on the basis of the isothermal theory without including any additional dynamic processes. The masses and densities of the faint extended halos around the planetaries NGC 6543 and NGC 6826 are estimated; the results indicate that these structures cannot be easily explained in the framework of the theory since their nature and origin are still unknown.
