We describe two computer hardware and software systems based on personal computers which are used for specific image processing tasks in a local compute mode and also as workstations linked to larger computers. The advantages of the PC approach include low cost, continuous availability of a single user computer, and excellent interactive response. Some of the current disadvantages are the need to write some software, limited compute speed, and limited available memory, all of which are expected to be alleviated with products recently released.
