A broad emission feature, varying in less than five months, was observed in the spectrum of the QSO 1612+261 and may be identified as He I λ3889. Such a line may be produced in optically thin clouds in which He I λ5876 is not enhanced by collisional excitation. Another possible identification as [Ne III] λ3867 would suggest the existence of clouds of density 107cm-3. The observations indicate that the broad-line region of this QSO may be on the order of a light-month.
