A medium-resolution spectroscopic study of a complete sample of bright northern Seyfert galaxies was conducted. A correlation of the linewidths with the critical density and the ionization potential is found for NGC 1358 and NGC 3660. After correcting for the instrumental profile and the contributions of H II regions, several linewidths are shown to not exceed 250 km/sec. The line ratios are typical for Seyfert 2 objects for all the galaxies considered. Results suggest that locally Seyfert 2 galaxies are about 3.5 times more abundant than Seyfert 1 objects, and that they suffer from a more rapid drop-off in detection probability than Seyfert 1s.
