A model of change in geomagnetic field polarity is proposed. Paleomagnetic data for the last 180 million years were used in defining eight different regimes, different types of geomagnetic field change, with respect to the mean duration of one polarity, that is, the time during which a geomagnetic field of one direction is conserved. This mean time for each of the regimes varies from one regime to another in a wide range: from 180000 to 6.5 million years. It is shown that the change in geomagnetic field regimes evidently has a quasi-cyclic character; the duration of a cycle is ≡160 - 180 million years.
