Analytical results are presented from nucleus and tail images and spectra obtained eight days after the perihelion passage of Comet Wilson, with a view to differentiating between its observed properties and those of Comet Halley. Comet Wilson has a ray-structured ion tail in CO(+) emission that is of 65,000 km average width and more than 400,000 km length. The continuum profile derived from the nucleus-centered spectrum exhibits a distinct sunward asymmetry, and the imaging data show that most of the dust ejection occurs in a beam on the sunward side of the nucleus, producing a fanlike structure. The fan is about 70 deg wide, and originates about 12 deg east of the subsolar point; this indicates the direct rotation of Comet Wilson.
