The discovery is reported of a very large (85 pc x 22 pc) massive (about 1 million solar masses) molecular cloud extended parallel to the galactic plane southwest of M17. CO observations indicate that the cloud contains isolated fragments of enhanced temperature. Since these fragments appear to represent the continuation of an evolutionary sequence described by OB stars northeast of the cloud, it is suggested that an extended OB association will eventually form here. Implications of these observations for several current theories of star formation are considered.
