It is hypothesized, based on Vega observations, that the peanut-shaped nucleus of Comet Halley may have resulted from the collisional union of two bodies. The union could have been caused by destabilization of the system, e.g., by a tidal-force burst; the two bodies that were joined were not completely destroyed, judging by the saddle betwen them on the comet figure. Quantitative evaluations confirm the possible conservation of the original shape of the two cosmic 'icebergs' after their union at relative velocities up to several m/sec.
