The homogeneous nucleation and grain growth theory presently applied to the condensation of iron-bearing materials in a gas of solar composition indicates that high supersaturation is needed for iron vapor's homogeneous condensation into metallic form, due to its large surface tension. Such surface-active elements as N, O, S, and P, however, lower the surface tension or iron, and iron atoms can be encapsulated into precondensed MgSiO3 grains as FeO. S is found to be the most effective element in lowering the surface tension of iron in a cooling gas of solar composition.
