The probability of binary formation by three-body encounters is determined independently from numerical calculations and analytical considerations. The numerical results, which cover a wide range of impact parameters, show a significant discrepancy with respect to similar calculations by Agekyan and Anosova (1971). An asymptotic theoretical prediction gives a simple power-law whose coefficient and exponent are consistent with the present numerical results. Although the formation rate can be high even in large systems, it is concluded that practically all the binaries formed by this mechanism are too wide to affect cluster evolution.
