The nature and the distribution of carbon and nitrogen, and the contents and isotopic composition of carbonate minerals in Chassigny and the nakhlites were investigated. Results indicate that low-temperature carbon (i.e., with combustion temperature below 500 C) originated from two different sources, with one of these being consistent with terrestrial contamination and the other considered being indigenous to the meteorites. The accompanying low-temperature nitrogen was also found to be distributed between two components, although it was not possible to establish relationships between the nitrogen and carbon components released below 500 C. No evidence was found for trapped Martian atmospheric gases in any of the samples.
