It is shown that experimentally observed polarization characteristics of vertical-sounding signals can be explained by the interference of rays arising during reflection from a disturbed ionospheric layer. Internal gravity waves with scales of 40-100 km are considered as the main source of the disturbance; these waves are considered to be nearly constantly present at ionospheric heights. The properties of the wave disturbances make it possible to explain the diurnal variations of the polarization of the vertical-sounding signals.
