The rapid motion of filaments is interpreted as the result of the interaction between the filament current, the active region field, and the 'mirror' current field. A summary of velocity observations of eruptive prominences during their removal from the limb is presented. The filament energy integral is considered. The most rapid filament motion arises when loss of equilibrium occurs near the 'saddle' point of the potential surface. A comparison of parameters of eruptive prominences with finite and infinite motions is carried out on the basis of observations in June-July 1989.
