In order to compare the direction of the transverse magnetic field and the penumbral filaments the author has used five vector magnetograms of the active region BBR 18 474, recorded on 15 and 16 July 1982 at the Einsteinturm, and high resolution photographs of sunspots from the Pamir telescope of the Pulkovo Observatory. By combining sunspot photographs and maps of the transverse field azimuth, he has obtained a good qualitative agreement of the directions of the penumbral filaments and the azimuths. The histograms of the azimuth differences show agreement between transverse field direction and the directions of penumbral filaments within a 29° deviation.
