New limits are presented on the intensity of the ground-state 1(1)-1(0) 118750.33 MHz line of O2 toward four extragalactic sources. At the 1-sigma level, the intensity of the O2 line is typically less than 1/40 that of CO j = 1-0, and the abundance of O2 is less than 1/20 that of CO. In a brief overview of the chemistry of oxygen in dense interstellar clouds, it is noted that the absence of copious amounts of O2 is indicative of the same conditions which imply nonequilibrium or early-time conditions for molecular material.
