Published X-ray observations of M33 and M31 are summarized, especially in respect to the quest for a detection of diffuse emission from these two nearby galaxies. Just recently, Chandra started to look at M31 and M33 and I will report on planned observations with XMM-Newton, too. I discuss what can be learned from detected diffuse X-ray emission in general, from the combination with magnetic field measurements and other wavelength observations. M31 and M33 are compared with other nearby galaxies where diffuse X-ray emission was detected and the existence of X-ray emission from hot gas is discussed in the framework of energy input from the galactic disks.
